Women of Color Have More Options for Skincare Needs

Key Points

  • In 2023, there are more skincare products for Black women available that address the unique skin concerns of women of color.

  • Skincare products for Black females are widely available in mass market and specialty stores.

  • Black-owned beauty product lines, such as Rihanna's Fenty Beauty, have changed the skincare market.

Do people of color require different products to address their skincare challenges? The answer is a definite "Yes!" Many mass-market consumer skincare lines still don't provide adequate skincare products for Black women and men to effectively meet their beauty needs, but that is slowly changing.

Black folks have historically had to deal with having fewer beauty products that spoke to their color spectrum and hair textures. This challenge to find skincare products for Black women and men was often met with mixing and matching shades or relying on the few mass-market companies manufacturing beauty items for the deeper ranges of melanated skin.

In addition to — and possibly in response to — many Black-owned brands entering the beauty market, national labels are providing more products to address the skincare needs of people of color (POC).

Skincare Brands for Black Women

Exciting launches of Black-owned beauty brands span the globe. Many owners not only came up with the idea for their companies but are actively involved in creating their products in the lab. They’re not simply placing a name or logo on a jar, but actively contributing to selecting the products' ingredients and formulas.

Challenges like hyperpigmentation, dryness, ashiness, and shades for rich skin tones are common issues for Black women. Blending foundations to create the right undertones is no longer necessary to create the perfect color or seamless "slayed" finish.

Some lines are strictly beauty and color cosmetics while others also offer skincare. Some brands specialize in addressing particular POC issues.

Cosmetics brands offer a wider range of shades for every beautiful hue of Black skin. Rich tones with color intensity and payoff show up — and show off — the variety of complexions of melanated skin. Non-ashy formulas stay true to shade and enhance.

Foundations provide light enhancement to full coverage. The scientific approach to skin matching provides shades compatible with the lightest to darkest melanated skin tone.

Black-owned and mass-market lines have expanded their haircare offerings for all hair textures — fine, curly, wavy hair or thicker; coarse, tightly coiled hair; or a mix of these — to pamper your hair. There are also organic and vegan options.

There are several popular POC-specific brands offered by your local specialty and big-box retailers: Danessa Myricks Beauty, Shani Darden Skincare, Buttah Skin, and many more. Fenty Beauty, however, is likely the leading Black-owned skincare brand.

Rihanna and Fenty Beauty: Redefining Beauty

Owner Rihanna Fenty, award-winning entertainer and fashionista known by her first name, needs no introduction to millions of fans.

Since its debut in 2016, Rihanna's Fenty Beauty has almost single handedly changed the cosmetics game. Fenty Skin debuted in 2020 with a full range of facial care.

Rhianna’s global skincare line has mass market appeal and is one of the first fully inclusive lines. Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin are featured in Sephora stores in 34 nations around the world (as of 2023).

This line fills a gap in the beauty industry. Fenty Beauty's purpose is to create inclusive products designed for all ethnicities.

"Fenty Beauty was created for everyone: for women of all shades, personalities, cultures, and races," Rihanna says. "I wanted everyone to feel included. That's the reason I made this line."

Fenty Beauty's extensive selection provides POC makeup shades that accentuate and enhance deeper hues of skin.

The endless array of complexions and undertones from cafe au lait to deepest ebony is part of what makes Black skin tones — and all melanated skin — so distinctive and beautiful.

Musical superstar Rihanna was "instrumental" in selecting everything from shades of lipstick and highlighter to foundation shades for Fenty Beauty. She chose the names of the makeup shades, like Flaunty Aunty (a deep rich brown) or She's A CEO (a chocolate nude).

Every detail of the line is thoughtfully curated and tailored to the diverse needs of her clientele.

More than a mogul, Rhianna is a product innovator. She demonstrates environmental responsibility by making her skincare packaging refillable and eco-friendly.

A few must-haves from the Fenty Beauty line include the Ease-Drop Skin Tint and Butta Drop Whipped Oil Hydrating Butter Cream.

Fenty Beauty Ease Drop Skin Tint

This isn't just a foundation. This is a tinted moisturizer. Fenty Beauty's Ease Drop Skin Tint does it all in one product. Expect light to medium buildable coverage in a lightweight formula. It can be used as a layer with primers and other moisturizers.

Ease Drop's shade range is one of the widest on the tinted moisturizer market. With 25 shades to choose from, chances are pretty good your skin tone is represented in Fenty Beauty's foundation selections.
